Journey-level Class Descriptions

Unless stated otherwise, upon successful completion of all courses listed here, counts toward Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for renewal of the California General Electrician’s License.


To successfully complete a class, journey-level members must attend 80% of the scheduled class sessions and achieve a minimum grade of 70%. Any absence(s) in classes less than 40 hours will result in class failure. Individuals who are required to pay a non-refundable class fee will not receive a refund of their class fees.

BLUEBEAM (40 hours):

Bluebeam construction software is introduced and used for marking up blueprints and detailing. This beginner course is intended to help students become intermediate users of the software. Knowledge of basic computer skills is highly recommended for those taking this course.

BLUEPRINT READING (40 hours):

This course combines the ETA curriculum for industrial blueprint reading and a brief introduction to the basic functions of Bluebeam construction software.

CONVENTION CENTER ORIENTATION (8 hours): 

This course covers scissor lift and forklift safety, power layout and distribution, and wiring of booths and displays. 

EAC SYSTEMS (40 hours):

The Electronic Access Control (EAC) Systems course introduces fundamental elements such as devices, credential types, and electric locks. Other topics include system design, installation, programming, and troubleshooting.

EVCS (18 hours):

The Electric Vehicle Charging Systems (EVCS) class is a self-paced CML course designed for residential, commercial, public, and fleet electric vehicle charging markets. Topics include requirements, regulations, products, and installation and maintenance strategies related to the electric/hybrid vehicle infrastructure. Passing the included exam earns a student the Electrical Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program (EVITP) certification from the State of California. 

ESAMTAC (48 hours): 

The Energy Storage and Microgrid Training and Certification (ESAMTAC) course introduces microgrid components and methods of storing electrical energy. The safe installation of battery storage systems is discussed, including assembly, testing, commissioning, maintenance, repair, retrofitting, and decommissioning. Passing the included exam earns a student the ESAMTAC certification.

Fiber Optics - FOA CFOT (40 hours): 

This course prepares students for the Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) exam. Topics include fiber optic theory, cable construction, and the design and management of fiber optic communications systems. 

FIRE ALARM (40 hours): 

System components, design, planning, installation, troubleshooting, and inspection requirements are discussed for residential and commercial facilities. The National Fire Alarm & Signaling Code (NFPA 72) is studied as well as local codes and specifications. 

FLS TECHNICIAN LICENSE PREPARATION (24 hours): 

This course is designed to prepare electrical workers for the California Fire and Life Safety Technician licensing exam. It includes test-taking tips and covers related articles in the National Electrical Code and the National Fire Alarm & Signaling Code (NFPA 70 & 72).

FIRST AID/CPR & AED (6 hours): 

This course is a combination of online and in-person training on basic first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and automated external defibrillators. A hands-on skills assessment must be successfully completed to obtain the certification. 

CBA FOREMANSHIP (40 hours): 

This course is intended for individuals who are currently in supervision or plan to assume a supervisory role. Topics include safety, contracts, scheduling, estimating, stewardship, harassment, dispatch procedures, and leadership skills. Students will also become familiar with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

GENERAL ELECTRICIAN LICENSE PREPARATION (40 hours): 

Designed to prepare members for the California General Electrician exam to obtain or renew their state license. Topics include test-taking tips, keywords, the structure of the NEC, using the table of contents and index, and studying NEC articles.

GROUNDING & BONDING (40 hours): 

This advanced grounding course is part of the apprenticeship program and is available for Journey-level workers to attend. Advanced topics include grounding related to separate buildings and structures, separately derived systems, special occupancies, conditions, and equipment, communication systems, ground fault circuit interrupters, ground fault protection of equipment, medium and high voltage, and test instruments. 

HARASSMENT AWARENESS TRAINING (4 hours): 

This is a self-paced CML course designed to increase awareness of different types of harassment. Topics include prohibited harassment, sexual harassment, and reporting harassment.

INDUSTRIAL SKILLS ORIENTATION (24 hours): 

This course is designed to teach students to be safe and successful in an industrial workplace. Topics include techniques to properly install rigid conduits, knot tying, hazardous locations, industrial environment safety protocols, and relevant NEC articles. 

INSTRUMENTATION - LEVEL 1 (72 hours): 

The Instrumentation Level 1 course explores electrical theory in the design, use, and calibration of various instruments. Topics include monitoring flow, temperature, pressure, and fluid level, and the operation of switches, indicators, transmitters, and recorders. Students who pass the exam with a grade of 80% or higher will earn the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Level 1 certification.

INSTRUMENTATION - LEVEL 2 (48 hours): 

The Instrumentation Level 2 course emphasizes hands-on calibration and testing for a variety of process systems to ensure a safe equipment start-up procedure. Topics include troubleshooting techniques and maintenance. This course prepares students for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Level 2 exam, which earns members the full EPRI Certification and qualifies them to be dispatched as Instrumentation Technicians. EPRI Level 1 Certification is a prerequisite for the Level 2 course. 

LAQSP (32 hours): 

The Los Angeles Qualified Safety Person course covers Cal OSHA safety requirements and emphasizes safety training for the electrical trade. Successful completion of this course earns students a Local 11 LAQSP certificate and an OSHA 30 card with a Cal OSHA endorsement. This class has a no-miss policy, meaning you cannot be late to class at all, which would count as an absence or miss any day of class.

ADVANCED LIGHTING CONTROL (40 hours):

Learn to correctly select, design, and install energy-efficient and cost-effective commercial, residential, and industrial lighting systems using state-of-the-art lab boards built here at the ETI. License general electricians who successfully complete this course will earn the CACTP certification required to work in these jobs. 

CALCTP ACCEPTANCE TECHNICIAN (16 hours): 

Students completing this course will learn how to properly navigate the testing requirements needed for the California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program (CALCTP). The course includes how to fill out the necessary forms to ensure that installations meet Title 24 Part 6 guidelines. The Advanced Lighting Control class must be successfully completed before enrollment in this course.

MOTOR CONTROL (40 hours): 

This advanced course covers electronics, solid-state devices, motor control centers (MCCs), starters, programmable timers, and AC motor speed control. Lab activities include creating wiring diagrams used to wire and control a fully operational MCC. 

NEC - 2020 (40 hours): 

This course teaches proper and effective use of the NEC. All articles of the 2020 NEC are covered with an emphasis on the sections that most frequently apply to commercial installations. 

NFPA 70E - 2021 (24 hours): 

The National Fire Protection Association publication 70E outlines the practices and procedures necessary to comply with OSHA standards to protect employees from electrical hazards. This course incorporates the NFPA 70E to introduce practices and procedures workers should understand to avoid the severe hazards associated with working on and around energized electrical systems.

PHOTOVOLTAIC DESIGN & INSTALLATION (40 hours): 

This course covers site evaluation, system sizing and installation, inverter wiring, operation, testing, monitoring, metering, and troubleshooting.

REFINERY SAFETY ORIENTATION (RSO) – This 20-hour, 3-day training is provided by OSCA and is required to work on refinery job sites. Registering for RSO through the ETI allows the course to count for CEU credit. The training includes the following courses:

  1. Principles of Petroleum Refining (4 Hours) – Students are introduced to the ways in which crude oil is used to make various consumer products. Common refining terminology is covered as well as basic refining streams and unit configurations. Inherent hazards and emergency response processes are also discussed.

  2. Refinery Safety Overview (RSO) – (8 Hours) - Students will learn basic safety principles associated with working in High Hazard Facilities. Topics include hazard management, emergency action plans (EAPs), toxicology, PPE, respiratory and hearing protection, energy control (LOTO), confined space, heat stress, and other topics related to working safely in refineries.

  3. Safety as it Pertains to Crafts (8 Hours) - Students will learn to work safely with different trades and gain awareness of various trade interdependencies through examples such as stacked work, job sequencing, barricading, and dissimilar trades in direct proximity with each other. Risks associated with different trade types will be explored, such as electrical energy, product energy, radiation, and potential falling objects.

TRANSFORMERS (40 hours): 

This advanced course covers reactors, isolation transformers, autotransformers, buck-boost transformers, overcurrent protection, and associated tap rules.

VDV TECHNICIAN LICENSE PREPARATION (24 hours):

This course is designed to prepare electrical workers for the California Voice-Date-Video Technician licensing exam. Topics include test-taking tips, structured cabling, electrical theory, and related articles in the NEC. 

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS (40 hours):  

This course is an overview of intelligent network video design and installation. Topics include the history of analog video, surveillance components, IP concepts, and design considerations. Students will plan, install, and operate a fully functioning intelligent video surveillance system complete with video management equipment.
