A STEP Toward the Future: From High School to Electrical Careers

Long Beach high school seniors have an exciting new opportunity to get a head start on their careers in the electrical industry through the Seniors to Electrical Program (STEP).

In partnership with IBEW Local 11, NECA, the Port of Long Beach, Morrow Meadows, and Long Beach schools, LAETI is helping create a direct pathway for students to begin electrical apprenticeship training before graduating high school.

The inaugural class is expected to include approximately 25 seniors from three Long Beach high schools. Students will attend their regular high school classes during the day and complete the first-year electrical apprenticeship curriculum after school.

Students who successfully complete STEP, meet all program requirements, and graduate from high school will have a direct-entry pathway into IBEW Local 11's apprenticeship program, giving them an opportunity to transition from the classroom into a rewarding career in the electrical industry.

The STEP program was developed by John "Big John" Harriel Jr., IBEW Local 11 Executive Board Member and a leader at Morrow Meadows, whose dedication to mentorship and creating opportunities for young people in the trades helped bring this initiative to life.

Beyond technical training, STEP emphasizes the importance of commitment, responsibility, and professionalism. Students are expected to maintain consistent attendance, arrive on time, complete their coursework, and meet the standards of the program.

Through the collaboration of industry partners, educators, and community leaders, STEP represents a shared investment in the next generation of skilled electrical workers.

The partnership also supports the Port of Long Beach's vision of developing a skilled workforce while advancing its long-term sustainability and zero-emissions goals.

“This partnership is a major game-changer for the Port of Long Beach and the IBEW, offering life-changing career opportunities for local youth. This first-of-its-kind partnership will create a clear path for students to join the Port’s future workforce,” said Port of Long Beach CEO Dr. Noel Hacegaba. “Electrical demands are expected to grow significantly as we work to become the world’s first zero-emissions port, making this partnership with the IBEW a critical investment in sustainable goods movement and the future of Long Beach’s youth.”

As the electrical industry continues to evolve, STEP is helping prepare the next generation of skilled workers while connecting local students with meaningful career opportunities in their own communities.

Harriel hopes the success of this first class will inspire future generations and serve as a model for expanding similar opportunities into other communities.

At LAETI, we're proud to be part of this initiative and look forward to helping students build their futures—one STEP at a time.
